As the beam of light leaves the prism it again gains speed, and its direction changes. This light bending is called refraction, and it is why we see these lovely colors as the light goes through the prism.

Birefringence is the optical property of a material that causes light to be split into two beams. In other words, due to the fact light is traveling into the material in two separate ways, two different waves are formed.
Total Internal Reflection — Yet another distinct quality of a square glass prism This happens when a ray of light hits one of the prism's edges at an angle below a certain threshold, causing the light to reflect back into the prism rather than passing through. This quality is highly beneficial in technology, especially optical fibres, utilized for transmission of light signal through it with minimal loss over long distances.
