Have you ever wondered how a mirror works, when we look in one? Light is bounced back towards our eyes for us to see ourselves - this helped by mirrors. They are great tools to allow us look at ourselves! But have you heard not all mirrors are same? A first surface mirror is a unique kind of mirror, it provides the ability to see yourself in pristine clarity.
A first surface mirror is not the same as an average, everyday household item. The back of the glass in most mirrors has a reflective layer. This shiny surface is what enables a mirror to reflect light. With some exceptions, but there are what is known as first surface mirrors has the shiny layer on top of the glass. This is very important! It means that light hits the mirror and then directly comes back to your eyes. So in this way you get a true copy of your image with maximum clarity.
A normal mirror will make the image seen in it is a bit different to how you truly appear Do you know why? First surface mirrors are very ideal for use in environments that require precise measurements. For instance, they are used by scientists in telescopes to achieve great images of stars and planets. They also allow us to pick up on the details (like a star, or even more big objects) as due to their remote location and relatively small size without seeing they would be much harder!
How are these first surface mirrors made we know you ask. This is done by a unique process, namely "Vacuum Deposition". During this, a machine sprays small glittering beads at the front of glass. They aggregate together to form thin sheets that are brilliant at reflecting light. The end product is a mirror that, by the standards of typical mirrors on market today, reflects light back far more effectively.
This is one really cool thing about first surface mirrors - they reflect just about all of the light that hits them, up to 98% (depending on whether you are using a dielectric coated mirror or not)! Because of this high precision they are very handy in various fields like medicine, aviation etc where accuracy is with paramount importance.
