Like a spherical mirror, a thin lens can form an image by causing the light to bend.
The spherical mirror and the thin spherical lens are two of the most important tools of optics. Optics is the study of light and its behaviors. Commonly believed light is so important that is teach us to know how we see up in this world. These two devices, spherical mirrors, and thin lenses allow scientists and researchers to gain knowledge about the light and its behavior when interacting with various materials in the environment.
Although spherical mirrors and thin spherical lenses can form images, they do so differently. Spherical mirrors are capable of reflecting light, and that means that the light bounces off of them. In contrast, thin spherical lenses are refracting (read bending) the light the passing through. They have their own strengths and weaknesses because of these differences.
We can create a very sharp and clear images using spherical mirrors that is used for many applications. But they can show only a narrow field of view, so you may not be able to see all that is around you at the same time. In contrast, thin spherical lenses can display a bigger area, letting you view more objects simultaneously. However, sometimes the pictures they produce do not appear as clearly as from spherical mirrors.
Many of the technologies that we encounter in our daily lives employ a variety of optical elements, including spherical mirrors and thin spherical lenses. Because of this, spherical mirrors may be used in telescopes. Telescopes allow us to see distant stars and planets in the universe. They create closer and clearer images of distant objects. Spherical mirrors also find use in car headlights. By reflecting light, the mirrors help us see better while driving at night, making our roads safer.
Spherical lenses (like A-D) and thin circular lenses are also critical. The use in cameras helps us shoot crisp images. When you use a camera, a thin lens permits light to pass through and project a sharp image of whatever you are photographing. Eyeglasses also use thin spherical lenses. They aid in the act of seeing by bending light such that it focuses properly on the retina, a light-sensitive membrane at the back of the human eye. The small spherical lenses are also used in microscopes and other systems to see small objects (visibly cannot see naked eye) and those lenses are used to magnify the small objects.
