Un prisma di vetro equilatero

A glass prism is a specific, triangular, known shape crafted from clear glass. What makes it unique is that it has three equal sides. A nice feature of a glass prism is that it is transparent — you can see through it. We use these prisms to divide light into several colors. The un prisma equilatero are used in many science experiments and are also used in cameras to help find images.

NOAIDA Light does not just pass straight through a glass prism. Instead, as it enters more dense media, this change of direction is called refraction. This is a phenomenon called refraction, and occurs due to the fact that glass is more dense than the air surrounding the glass. Light, when it travels from air to inside the glass, is actually slowed down. Light is made up of colors, and these colors travel at different speeds and bend different amounts as they pass through the prism. That bending effect produces white light in the form of a lovely spectrum of colors.

The Refraction of Light Through an Equilateral Glass Prism

You can create a rainbow if you point a light through a NOAIDA glass prism. You can do this fun experiment at home or at school. Light that comes through prism becomes bent into rainbow colors. You observe the colors in the following sequence: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. This incredible effect is the result of the light refracting, or bending, through the prism and splitting into its own individual colors, similar to the colors observed in a real rainbow. It’s almost like magic.
